WINTER IS UPON US.
Not that you'd know it here in Chicago, where it's sunny and cool out and has snowed ONCE and it's DECEMBER.
*shakes fist at the sky*
But I can pretend, after all. viggosterri and pinkfinity both sent me a lovely snowflake via LJ (thank you! It's like a flurry!), and I've been curled up pretending it's snowing and watching videos.
bluejeans07 linked me to DOCTOR CLAUS:
Less Christmassy, but no less hilarious, is cluegirl's accusation that I am secretly one of these gentlemen, professing my love of typeface. I WISH.
And finally -- this was one of my favourite films as a child, around the holidays. Most of the actual cartoons in it are old or clipped from barely-relevant films, but I loved the little intervals with the dancing toys and the incredibly stupid lyrics. This is just part one; you can find the rest on youtube pretty easily.

WELL.
The beans and the beer bread came out well -- for the many who've asked, the beer bread is a quickbread, a mix from Trader Joe's, $2 and well worth it because it is DELICIOUS.
Meanwhile this morning, the yoghurt is yogging and will be for the next ten to fourteen hours; the pumpkin bread is baking, the rice is soaking, and the curry for the rice is defrosting. I am going to have some EPIC LUNCHES this week, between the curry and the beans and the chowder. And the fried stuffing, oooh.
As long as I'm taking a break from cooking, I may as well post Chapter Nine of Valet of Anize; Chapter Ten might...take a while.
I used to write faster than this, you know, but I also used to have a job that wasn't nine-to-five and I don't think I wrote as well. I'm trying to embrace the genre-adventure-story thing and not struggle with imbuing too much meaning in this; it's never going to be the same kind of story as Nameless was. It's still my problem child, but I'm finding moments of pure beauty in it, so. I do what I can.

Hokay, I have taken out the trash and gone to the store and done Wii workout for the evening. I've done it enough now that all the exercises are in order on my "favourites" menu -- six yoga positions, boxing, penguin-feeding, and then the "sit very still" game as a closer. Though one of the yoga poses is out of order because omg it feels so good to feel my whole spine pop when I do it. :D
Tomorrow is the DAY OF COOKING. I'm going to make baked beans (with turkey, naturally), beer bread, pumpkin bread, Hellish Gluten-Free Fruit Bread, yoghurt, rice for the turkey curry, and ground beef. And then do a lot of dishes. A LOT OF DISHES.
On the plus side: I will have food for, you know, EVER.

AND THEN I SLEPT FOREVER.
Okay, till 10, which is still late for me. Since then I have essentially goofed off. I did try to get the student loan application finished, but they need my Borrower PIN, which I left at work in my Giant Spreadsheet Of (Oh Shit Nobody Better Steal This Or They'll Have All My) Passwords.
I do have a few links to share -- one, tripping_doozer asked me to signal boost a campaign to Bring Anya Home, a letter-writing project to help unite two sisters separated when one of them was adopted to the United States.
Two, ljgeoff is having an End Of Time party on January 2nd in Chicago. Locals should go check out the preliminary post and drop an email if you're interested.
In other news...this is tough to say without sounding like an asshole, or like I'm angry (which I'm not) but let me try:
At this time of the year there are many charitable appeals, and nearly half of all charitable giving occurs around the holidays. I want to remind everyone that while I like to publicise good causes when I can, the primary function of this journal is still a journal, an account of my life and the events therein.
I feel bad turning people down for help in publicising or signal-boosting, and I will often post for friends who ask, but I can't always say yes, especially depending on how relevant or local the cause is to the readership I have here. If I did post everything I was asked to post, copperbadge would basically be a messageboard for other peoples' causes and concerns, and the whole point of my ability to reach a wide readership would become moot. (As an example, six people asked me to publicise events or causes for them yesterday.)
I appreciate your understanding. :) It's not easy for me to say no, but sometimes I have to.

8:27p I got fic, wheeee!!!
I got my Kinky Kristmas wish at daily_deviant yesterday and I'm so very lucky because this is wonderful. :)
Idle Threat by Anonymous (Sirius/Regulus, Severus/Sirius/Regulus; NC-17; ~4,400 words) Severus finds Sirius and Regulus doing something brothers should not be doing, and exacts payment for his silence. Warning for dub-con bordering on non-con, and incest, obviously.
This is rather dark, and oh, so, so good! The kind of fic you don't often see anymore - it felt quite oldschool to me. :) Marauders-era, and I loved how there's clearly deep affection between Sirius and Regulus despite their family issues, and then there's Snape, who's malicious and cruel as he jumps at the chance to extract revenge on Sirius for all his bullying. The Snape/Sirius dynamic is perfect as for me, very canon. The fic is power games and blackmail and wrongness and great dialogue. And there's angry-wrong-hot sex, too. It all filled me with such glee. I definitely recommend it and not just because it's my gift, though it is a marvellous gift! :D
~*~
I'm super busy with work and stuff till Dec. 17, but I'm still trying to read and look at anything that grabs my attention, so there might be holiday fest recs at some point. (As long as I get out of my latest bad habit of posting only once a month. >.>)

10:51a People Unclear on the Concept.
So there's this site that's got me rolling my eyes and gritting my teeth today. It's touting a Shub-Niggurath Solstice Sacrifice, and asking people to donate to the altruistic charity Heifer.org, in order to procure the goat which they intend to sacrifice to Shub-Niggurath, (Black Goat of the Woods With a Thousand Young, Empress of Madness, and also entirely made-up by HP Lovecraft and his buddies,)
As a witch, I call major shenanigans here. I don't care if you're making sacrifice to something that isn't real -- there are plenty of hungry beasts out there which will be more than happy to suck down what you're offering up, and to step into the thoughtform you're providing. Every force evolves a form, and this force you asshats are giving lip service to wanting to see is going to be ENTIRELY not what you thought you wanted once it follows you home!
As a human with ethics, I call major shenanigans here. Heifer.org was created to help people who are STARVING. People who have no resources, and who need such basics in order not to fucking die. I don't care if you're tired of hearing Christmas Carols, and of not being able to find a place to park at the mall, what you are doing is actually taking help and sustenance away from someone who actually DOES need it. All because you're in a pissy mood and feeling a bit scroogeley? Grow the FUCK UP, sunshine! You need to go hungry a LOT, if you think that joke is fucking funny.
As a person who has READ Lovecraft, I call major shenanigans here. Okay, moron, here's Lovecraft's Unspoken Law #1 -- The acolytes who do the summoning ARE the offerings, NOT the apperitif that's tied to the altar. THAT life force just opens the door; it's YOUR life force that tempts the entity to come through it. You're invoking a God of Madness, and expecting gratitude? Forebearance toward you? That she wouldn't reach for the first meal to hand -- YOU, -- and make a bite size crunchy of your mind, soul, and/or bodyparts? You don't invoke what you cannot banish. Anyone who's read even a single fantasy novel has grasped that concept.
Except you, apparently.
Ghod, some people just need to be knocked down... (No, I am not going to share the URL. I don't want to encourage traffic to this site, not even as a joke. We could wind up with Shub Niggurath running for President in 2012 on the HyperConservative ticket, on the winds of that kind of humour... Oh wait... nevermind.)

3:34a Blues are nocturnal.
Tonight so far has included yoga, the DVD commentary for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, some very strange and random urge to clean the grout in the backsplash above my kitchen sink with a toothbrush, digging through the external hard drive and rediscovering the OST for Chrono Cross, my neighbour orgasming incredibly loudly, downloading anything and everything that involves Robert Downey Jr.'s face, and rearranging my attic while muddling over the issues of identity and existance in Chrono Cross.
Not sleeping is certainly productive, but not in that way where it's useful. I haven't gone to bed in three days now! It is very strange to subsist on random couch naps, lemme tell you.
Tomorrow is movie day, as Roomie's retroactive pay finally showed up, so we're gonna go see 2012 and The Men Who Stare at Goats. As much as I want to see both, I really wish Sherlock freakin' Holmes was out already.
In other news, I want to write fic but I don't want to actually write. This presents an obvious problem.

12:57a Compilation of RL, Alex Rider, Audiobooks...
Had a very lovely plate of lasagne at our office's end-of-year dinner, which was fun and relaxing especially since I'm lucky enough to avoid the 'official' Christmas party by going home earlier on the same day. Yay - hate those! Small talk and dress-up and alcohol is what I believe goes on in the seventh level of hell.
And I managed to write quite a bit of my Alex Rider ficlet on the train there and back. Well, I tried to write something for the flash_rider challenge, but it's already gone beyond 'flash' :(
In a way, this might be pointing to a solution to my 'no more festfics because they *grow* and then I'm going mad trying to finish' problem... Sign up, then go at it, hell-bent to write a drabble. That will inevitably end up as a 1000 word fic, minimum length requirement, bingo. Because setting out to write a 1000 word fic won't work. I tried it here, and am at more than twice that length already, with more to come :(.
BUT... am listening to the audiobook version of 'Eagle Strike' (library had no book version), and it's a strange sort of fun; first audiobook ever. The voice itself is distracting (sort of caging the imagination and clashing with how I feel it *should* sound), but the details are so much more present and memorable - no skimming if I don't try to do anything besides listening.
I recall someone on my flist recently saying that one of their betas made an audio version of the fic they were betaing, and couldn't understand the benefit. Now I do. Weak and awkward constructions just jump out at you. The exciting bits most certainly do too.
As always, ignore cutesy critter - it's just basking in views :).
